I’m Considering An Abortion

If you’re unsure of how abortions are performed, it’s critical you know the different procedures so that it won’t result in any health-related issues in the future. Abortion can be considered a medical procedure, depending on how far along fetal development is, and it’s important to realize the risks that can be associated with the different procedures. From the abortion Plan B pill, RU 486 pill, or surgical abortion, your body could respond negatively to several different health issues. Also, be sure you are aware of the costs of abortions. The farther along the development is, the more expensive it will be. An abortion can cost anywhere from $500 to $5,000.

If you are considering an abortion and have further questions regarding the different procedures, please contact our staff at Solutions Health and Pregnancy Center and we will be happy to assist you with more information and resources you may need.

What Should I Do First?

The first thing you should do is confirm your pregnancy with one of our free pregnancy tests and an ultrasound. If you are indeed pregnant, our friendly, knowledgeable staff can help you understand the facts and risks associated with each procedure.

What Are The Different Types of Abortion Procedures?

Plan B

Plan B, which is often referred to as the “morning after pill”, is a high-dosage birth control pill that you can take up to 72 hours after intercourse. After 72 hours and the longer you wait, it becomes significantly less effective. At the same time, it is not to be used as a form of prevention because taking it before sex will not be effective. Plan B is used to delay or prevent ovulation or interfere with the fertilization of an egg after conception. This option is not always successful at ending a pregnancy.

RU 486

RU 486 is a series of two pills that are used for early medical abortion. The first pill will reduce blood flow to the embryo and the second will induce labor, causing side effects such as severe cramps, bleeding, nausea and vomiting. Although the RU 486 pills are often used for early-term abortions, it is possible that it may not be enough, meaning a surgical abortion may still be necessary to end the pregnancy.

Surgical Abortions

The most common surgical procedure is the Manual or Vacuum Aspiration procedure. This procedure involves using either a syringe or vacuum to suck the pregnancy from the uterine wall. Most common symptoms during the procedure include cramping, nausea, sweating, and faintness.

The Dilation and Evacuation procedure combines vacuum aspiration, dilation and curettage, and forceps. Patients are given a sedative and injection into the cervical area, while the larger parts of the embryo or fetus are removed. The lining of the uterus will then be scraped, removing any remnants of the pregnancy from the body.

What Are Some Abortion Risks?

As with any medical procedure, there are risks associated with having an abortion. Some risks may include heavy blood loss, damage to the cervix or uterus, infection, damage to other internal organs, sepsis (total body infection caused by RU486), fertility loss and death. If you still have questions, please feel free to make an appointment. Our staff will provide you with information regarding abortion procedures and the health risks associated with them.
